Why we need an HDTV Antenna?
On June 12, 2009, analog signals were shot down and all new digital TV era has arrived in the United States. This change has effected about 20 to 30 millions of households who have at least 1 TV set. First, you will need to have a Home Antenna. Indoor Antenna or Outdoor Antenna? It all depends on how far the broadcasting stations are from the location where you are going to mount the antenna. Next, depending on what kind of TV sets you have (Analog TV or Digital TV).
If you have a traditional analog TV, you will need a converter box to convert digital signals your HDTV antenna receives into an analog format. So it makes those signals viewable on your analog TV set.

Note: All TV sets sold after May 25 2007 should already have a built-in digital TV tuner. The easiest way to tell if it is an digital is to check the TV set or manual and there should be a mark labelled as “Integrated Digital Tuner”, “Digital Tuner Built-In”, “Tuner”, “DTV”, “ATSC” or “HDTV”.
VHF / UHF Antenna ?
Lots of people are confusing about VHF/UHF. VHF and UHF are two different types of frequency bands. Basically, a Very High Frequency(VHF) tuner can receive channels from 2 through 13 and an Ultra High Frequency (UHF) tuner can receive channels from 14 through 83. Because of the availability UHF channels have, currently, most of the HDTV stations uses UHF bands but there are still some VHF channels. So now you should know what kind of home antenna you should get depending on what type of channels you are willing to watch. But this doesn’t strictly limit consumers’ choices. There are many kinds of HDTV antennas now in the market can receive both UHF and VHF signals at the same time with decent price range for consumers to choose. In addition, if you use an indoor antenna and would like to receive signals on VHF channels, you may need to use an antenna with amplification.
