How do I get out of my cosmoline belt pouch and gun leather?
I recently bought a Mosin Nagant Russian surplus that was kept in cosmoline. He also appeared with a bottle completely covered cosmoline who was in the same bag as my belt and ammunition pouch. Well, needless to say that everything was in disorder. I know you can use heat to get the stuff out of the rifle but the real work on the belt and cover? No, the leather pouch, the strap is made of canvas. The only reason I'm anxious to start the strap in the washing machine is so old it is.
Boil for few minutes in water. DO NOT use your mom or wife / GF pots! (Believe me, there!) Cosmoline liquefies a lower temperature than 212 degrees of boiling water, and should remove most of the train. About five minutes is fine. Afterwards, use a good degreaser like Purple Power, Fantastic, etc. and clean and scrub. On the leather when it dries use oil leather.
