Mount St. Helens is adjacent to an active margin (Who is a "destructive margin" or "margin of collision", terms that I do not use). Mount St. Helens is in an area called "back-arc volcanism," and not on the margin at all. This catastrophe happened because people insist on living near hazardous areas. Mount St. Helens is a composite volcano composed of alternating layers of andesite, dacite and rhyolite. The mineralogy of these rocks contain many "sticky" minerals such as quartz, feldspar and mica. As such, they then clog the neck until volcanic pressures built overcome the resistance of the roof of the plug. This results in massive explosions. As bad as the explosion of Mount St. Helens appears be, it is small in the caldera calderas as historical Krakatoa explosion or prehistoric caldera of Yellowstone.
