Garmin eTrex GPS – can you explain how to set up routes via USB / internet?
It would be helpful if you would explain much. Where are you the roads? Draw yourself, a friend, out of a website? What do you use it for? Street navigation, geocaching, hiking back country? The Mapsource program should have come with your eTrex, and with all the cards you bought for her. Load the route in Mapsource and select the transfer to the GPS. That's it. GDB will read Mapsource (Garmin Data Base) files or GPX (GPS generic format). If you do not have Mapsource there are some free programs on the web that can load GPX files, but they are not as good as Mapsource. The best way is to design roads with Mapsource, but difficult if you do not buy cards that cover the area you will be in. The base map is quite rare, but better than what you get with Most free programs. USAphotomaps (http://jdmcox.com/) is a free program that also handles maps free Microsoft TerraServer. If you have purchased cards Traffic Garmin Mapsource will create street by street, but the exact street routes used can change when it is transferred to the GPS when it decides that the best route. If you want to go through specific points, it is best to place waypoints on them. Other routes you need to score exactly as you want, since the GPS will create straight lines between points that you select. You can also create routes through My function Google Maps. You can use GmapToGPX (http://www.elsewhere.org/GMapToGPX/) or save the route as a KML file in Google maps and use http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input to convert. The converted files will generally be the route marked out as a track. If you really want it as a route, you must use a program to transfer the road to plot a route over the track. This is a good method if you do not have a map in Mapsource that the details you need.
