I encourage you to take my list, google their names and determine for yourself what is best for you. As you all know, GPS technology is changing quickly and growing cheaper by the year. I encourage you to check back regularly.

Critical Features your GPS will need if Deer Hunting

- A good battery with a long life (A charge should last at least 15 to 23 hours)

The Handheld GPS and its long battery life

Long battery life is almost as important as GPS accuracy. You can probably imagine why. We all know that deer hunting is no short walk in the park. Most hunts last at least a day. A lot of frustration can be reduced with a long GPS battery. There is nothing worse then having to cut a hunt short because your GPS unit only has enough juice to get you back to camp. Again, its a good idea to make sure you handheld GPS fits the long battery life criteria before making a purchase.
GPS Memory and Deer Hunting

It is a common practice to revisit waypoints several times because most deer hunters have spots the like. Having to delete prexisting waypoints because your latest hotspot can’t be stored in your maxxed out GPS unit is an outrage. So save yourself the trouble, when shopping for a GPS unit, make sure to include lots of memory in your criteria for the perfect unit.

NO heavy clunkers! Light Weight and Portable

A heavy GPS unit is a huge burden to deer hunting. It’s almost 2010 for crying outloud. There is no excuse for a clunker in the forest. I have seen some ridiculous handheld units way as much as 4 pounds. Hunting with such a device would be flat out crazy I would have to say that anything over a couple pounds is too heavy for deer hunting. And of course, this means your criteria should include a unit that must be at or below two pounds.

Having WAAS Capability

WAAS has been around for awhile and yet many GPS owners still have no idea what it is. WAAS is one of those capabilities that gives your GPS device incredible accuracy. Accuracy of up to 3 meters. When you are on the ground and in the forest, you will need this kind of accuracy, having a resolution of 10 or so feet will keep you from falling off cliffs.

Making sure your Unit outlives the rainshower

Obviously, weather is an issue when outdoors and in the woods. There is nothing worse then being 10 miles away away from camp and it starts raining. Oh wait, having a GPS unit that is not water resistant in that scenario would qualify it as worse. When looking for a unit, make sure you can at least purchase a case for it so it stays out of direct contact with water.
