GPS is getting to be more a part of our daily lives all the time. If you buy a new car, there are good chances that the option is available for a GPS navigation system with it. This is a matter of time before the GPS becomes a standard feature in each new car that rolls off the assembly line. Cell phone GPS is also increasingly in leaps and bounds. At the present time. if you make a call emergency police or fire department of a drive – corded phone the police know exactly where you are calling. But not with a mobile or cellular phone. This, however, will soon change. Almost all new mobile phones will soon have a GPS inside somewhere. Even photography is to get into the act. Some new cameras have a built-in GPS so when you take a picture, it tells you the latitude and longitude of the place where you were and stamps as information about the photo.
We tend to assume GPS the same way as we do the Internet. We assume that it is almost free for everyone and available everywhere, but it's really not true. GPS was developed in the 1970s and is owned, operated and controlled by the army of the United States. If the U.S. military wants to cut or control access to your system GPS, they can. In fact prior to May 2000, all civilian GPS units had limited access to the GPS system called selective availability. Before that date that GPS would work just fine, but would not be as precise as military units of GPS. Normal GPS accuracy is above 20 meters, but with selective availability, it is only 100 meters. Today, however, all GPS receivers – military or civilian – have the same precision. So for the moment, GPS is free for everyone around the world. But in the future, if a terrorist group or country were to have access to weapons Guided by GPS, the U.S. military could cut their access to GPS by encrypting the signal.
The GPS system consists of 24 satellites military around the Earth at an altitude of 11,000 miles so that at any given time and location of a GPS receiver receives a signal from at least 6 of these satellites at once. They are set up in 6 orbital paths with 4 satellites at regular intervals in each of the 6 orbits. Signals by these satellites are available anywhere on earth, 24 hours a day and are not affected by the weather. Older GPS receivers just had channel so they had to scroll through the 6 or more satellites at a time, but newer units have 10 parallel channels or more if you get more more specific information quickly.
The biggest headache for GPS systems is the time required for the signal to travel from the satellite to your receiver. You get the 6 satellite signals the willingness of all at different distances from you and are in rotation of the earth at high speed. Thus, the signals Your GPS receiver will not be automatically synchronized in time. Because of this problem, the Army has limited civilian GPS units so they do not work if they are moving faster than 900 knots 60,000 feet or more above sea level. But most non-aviation GPS will give error messages if you move over 90 miles per hour. Clearly, if you are not moving, a GPS will be much more accurate.
