How can I clean a gold plated backing toilet brush?

I have a wall of gold-plated toilet brush holder. I noticed an accumulation what I suppose, is sprayed room and possibly urine (?). The appearance of a liquid is dried, and feels rough the touch. I tried a little hot soapy water and a good scrub, but that hasn `t worked. Has anyone had suggestions. I live in the UK.

I suggest soaking paper towels in vinegar and then deposited on the support so that they can stick and stay. Alternatively, you can use rage soaked in vinegar to throw on it. Let stand for as long as possible. A good eight hours should do it.
