What could the killer whale to evolve in 400 years?
Since they are already at the top of the food chain and almost totally adapted to their environment (Aside from having to breathe the air)? I read about two things that concern at this time Navy sonar and oceanic toxic pollutants affecting their reproduction. Do you think they will eventually disappear? Or will they become more adapted to their ever-changing ecosystem and develop fish-like gills and teeth?
Well, take a look at results of the "forced evolution" of sperm whales and blue whales. Cachalots used to be huge. Some are 80 feet long, but documentation of them being in the wild is about 65 feet for men bull. Why? Because the greatest of great men were driven … so that their genetic material removed for greatness may have been taken out of the gene pool. All that in a 500 years ago. Similar pressures may have been smaller blue whales. The largest ever recorded was over 110 feet long. It is rare to find one nearly 95 feet in this century. What is more likely to occur in the next 400 years are the social changes. Killer whales are exceptionally intelligent and can adapt to many different pressures, including interactions with humans. So evolution can be simply behavior. And behaviors, so advantageous could eventually lead to physical changes. For example, you could see whales throw themselves up on beaches gravel in Argentina to catch seals. http://www.redorbit.com/news/science/1345802/killer_whales_hunt_on_shore_in_argentina/ This kind of behavior, or even divergence different populations to specialize in different prey. There are orcas that eat only fish, others that eat only other mammals sailors. These types of behaviors, culture and preferences could mean an eventual evolution into distinct species, to the point where they are no longer able to pass. Mammals have not developed gills so far, I doubt that would happen. They have done very well with the density of myoglobin and how they use oxygen during their dives. I see that the noise problems of the oceans could mean more pressure on the various ways to find prey – like the other senses (whiskers using seals and walruses) or perhaps to detect electrical currents like sharks sniffing / tasting water.
