How Soundproof windows Reduce Noise
Soundproof windows actually refer to two different products and solutions for excessive noise heard inside the house from outside with the windows closed. One would be specially designed windows with two separate panes of laminated glass that are best used in the original construction of the dwelling, that give much better sound reduction than normal single pane glass windows. This type of window can also be used to replace existing single pane windows, but replacement is expensive, messy and time-consuming. It also usually provides a much lower level of soundproofing than the second option we will discuss.
The newest, most effective and most economical soundproof windows to reduce external noise up to a perceived level of 95% are a second, special laminated and spring-sealed glass window mounted on the inside of the window pane leaving a “dead air” space between the newly added and the existing window. Both windows open and close as might be needed, and when closed, offer the best barrier to sound at the least cost. Adding these special windows on the inside takes hours with little if any mess, compared to the days it takes to remove existing windows completely, install new windows, and then refinish and re-paint the frames around the windows inside and out. Much less labor = much less cost.
These new inside windows also insulate and stop drafts, effectively lowering heating and cooling costs in addition to offering the most effective soundproofing. Additionally, you can completely change the inside appearance and even color of your windows you chose for each room in which they are installed, while leaving the outside appearance of the windows exactly the same as they have always been.
The unique construction of the added soundproof window is what makes the tremendous difference in noise reduction they achieve. The laminated glass used has a layer of plastic that stops vibrations. Sounds are essentially vibrations in the air, and for a sound to pass through a window, the glass is hit with the sound vibration on one side, causing the glass to vibrate that then causes the air on the other side to also vibrate creating the sound inside.
In addition, the rubber seals on the windows are spring-loaded to stop leaks and also cause the glass not to vibrate and pass sound. This “One-Two” punch along with the “dead air” space mentioned above which does not easily pass sound vibrations combine to give the best result. And that is how soundproof windows reduce noise.
