Yes the switch position to change air flow does nothing. Seems to be stuck in the windshield wind alone,
You lost your main vacuum supply to the mode dial. Defrosting is the default-free vacuum. Follow the vacuum hose offers plastic under the hood, where it passes into the heating box. Follow the other end thereof, and make necessary repairs.
